Table Games Online: Roulette, Blackjack, Baccarat and the House Margin

Table games are the oldest part of any casino, and international lobbies such as the one under the Cosmos brand still give them a whole section. This explainer covers how the main ones work in principle and why the "systems" sold around them do not change the maths. It is written for information only: since 1 May 2026 the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act 2025 prohibits online money games in India, skill and chance alike, and playing any of these tables for money from India falls under that prohibition. See the India home page for a summary of the Act.

Two ways to put a table online

A software table draws its results with a random number generator: the wheel or the deck is virtual, and each round is decided by the program. A live table, covered on our live casino page, streams a real dealer from a studio and records the physical result. Both settle stakes against the same kind of rules, and both include a built-in advantage for the house.

The main games in one paragraph each

Roulette. A ball lands in one of the numbered pockets of a wheel. Players stake on single numbers, groups of numbers or outside bets such as red or black. The presence of a zero pocket — two on some wheels — is what gives the house its margin, which is why roulette variants with fewer zeros are described as having a lower edge.

Blackjack. The player's hand competes with the dealer's to get closer to 21 without going over. Decisions such as hitting, standing or doubling do matter, which is why blackjack is often called a skill game. Even so, correct decisions reduce the house margin rather than remove it, and under the 2025 Act a skill element does not change the status of a money game.

Baccarat. Two hands, usually called Player and Banker, are dealt by fixed rules, and the person staking simply chooses which side will finish closer to nine, or a tie. There are no decisions after the stake, so it is purely a game of chance.

Poker-style tables. Casino poker variants are played against the house rather than other players, with a paytable for hand ranks. They should not be confused with peer-to-peer poker rooms.

Why systems and courses don't work

Table games attract more "strategy" products than any other category: doubling systems that promise to recover every loss, roulette "sectors", baccarat trend charts and paid courses that claim a winning method. The arithmetic is unforgiving. Each round is independent, the house margin is built into the payouts, and changing the size or order of stakes cannot move it. Doubling after losses only means that a long losing run — and long runs do happen — ends with a very large stake on one round. When a course or mentor asks for a fee to teach a winning system, the fee is the only reliable profit in the arrangement.

In India such offers often arrive through Telegram groups or social-media profiles that also share referral links. Section 6 of the Act bans advertising that directly or indirectly promotes online money games, so that combination is a red flag on its own.

Questions about table games

What counts as a table game?
Casino games built around a table layout: roulette, blackjack, baccarat and poker-style games. Online, they come either as software versions drawn by a random number generator or as live-dealer tables streamed from a studio.
Can a betting system beat roulette or blackjack?
No. Systems that raise stakes after losses only change the size and timing of bets; the house margin built into the rules stays the same, and long losing runs can wipe out a balance quickly.
Is it legal to play table games online for money in India?
No. The Online Gaming Act 2025 has prohibited online money games in India since 1 May 2026, whether they depend on skill or chance, and it covers sites run from abroad.
