Tennis Betting Markets Explained for Readers in India
Tennis has no draws and plenty of matches, so sportsbooks fill their screens with it around the clock. For readers in India the starting point is the law: since 1 May 2026, online money games — sports betting included — are prohibited under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act 2025. Offering them (section 5) and facilitating payments for them (section 7) can lead to up to 3 years and/or up to ₹1 crore, and foreign operators reachable from India are covered. What follows explains how tennis markets are put together, so that their design is visible. It is information, not a recommendation.
The match market and what the prices imply
The simplest tennis market has two outcomes: player A or player B wins the match. Converting decimal odds to implied probability shows the margin. As an invented example, a bookmaker might offer 1.40 on the favourite and 3.00 on the outsider. One divided by 1.40 is about 71.4%, and one divided by 3.00 is about 33.3%, which adds up to roughly 104.8%. A fair book would add up to exactly 100%, so the extra 4.8% is the bookmaker's built-in edge. These figures are illustrations, not real prices.
Set, game and handicap markets
Beyond the match result, screens offer set betting (the exact score in sets), total games over or under a line, and game handicaps that give the weaker player a head start of a few games. Each of these splits the same match into more outcomes. More outcomes means more prices, and each price can be shaded slightly below a fair level — which is why markets with long lists of correct scores carry wider margins than the simple match winner.
Live tennis and the speed problem
Because tennis is scored point by point, live markets change constantly: a break of serve, a tie-break or a medical time-out can flip prices in seconds. Some screens even offer markets on the next point or the next game. These are the fastest-cycling markets in sport, and that is their danger. Decisions taken every thirty seconds are rarely reasoned, and the margin is collected on each one. The pace also makes it easy to lose track of how much has been spent in total.
Integrity, data and scams
Lower-ranked tennis matches attract integrity concerns precisely because they are lightly watched, and fixing any part of a match is a crime that harms players and the sport. Scam channels exploit this by advertising "confirmed" tennis results or "inside" information from the locker room. Nobody with a genuine fix sells it to strangers online. Section 6 of the 2025 Act bans advertising that directly or indirectly promotes online money games, so promotions for paid tennis tips are a red flag. Never share identity documents, bank details or one-time passwords with a tipster, and keep records if you have lost money so you can report it to your state or union territory cyber cell.
